Job Summary:  

A regular faculty position is an active, principal member of the PA Department. A faculty member is assigned to teach the course(s) for which they are qualified by education, certification and professional experience. Instructional duties include planning courses and curricula, didactic and clinical teaching and evaluating courses. Related duties may include academic advising of students, supervision of independent study projects, maintaining weekly office hours, attending meetings, serving on committees and participation in special University events and ceremonies. Faculty at the rank of assistant professor are expected to engage in scholarship as defined in the Faculty/Staff Handbook and to be actively engaged in professional activities, which enhance the faculty role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities: 90%

  • Physician assistant courses, as assigned
  • Instructional faculty must be: a) qualified through academic preparation and/or experience to teach assigned subjects and b) knowledgeable in course content and effective in teaching assigned subjects. (A2.13)

Program responsibilities: 10%

  • Provide student support and academic advising
  • Participate in department meetings and committees
  • Represent the department on University committees as appropriate
  • Participate in department and University events and ceremonies
  • Provide leadership in advancing the mission and values of the College/University, incorporating principles of quality management for continuous improvement
  • Participate in maintenance of professional accreditation:
  • Program Faculty must be responsible for, and actively participate in the processes of: a) developing, reviewing and revising as necessary the mission statement, goals and competencies of the program, b) selecting applicants for admission to the PA program, c) providing student instruction, d) evaluating student performance, e) academic counseling of students, f) assuring the availability of remedial instruction, g) designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum, and h) evaluating the program. Qualifications

• Excellent writing and oral presentation skills

• Ability to prioritize and organize workload

• Knowledge of education and curriculum development

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• In-depth knowledge of the roles and requirements of physician assistant 

• Ability to use a variety of teaching methods effectively

• Clinical expertise as a physician assistant

• Computer expertise with word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet and presentation software

Education and/or Experience

• National certification (NCCPA) as a physician assistant required

• Master’s level degree required; Physician Assistant degree preferred

• Doctorate in a health science or related field preferred

• Two years of full-time teaching experience in a specialty area with entry-level students or licensed practitioners preferred. 

• Prior teaching experience in a baccalaureate or higher degree program required for masters prepared faculty and strongly preferred for doctoral prepared faculty at this rank.

• Clinical expertise in the clinical specialty area of teaching assignment(s).

• Offices with frequent interruptions

Physical requirements

• Considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer

• Use telephone and other electronic equipment used in general university operations

• May be required to travel to other buildings and campuses

• May be required to attend conference and training sessions within Bay Area or in- or out-of-state locations
